For Pride Month, Billboard asked numerous pop culture luminaries to write ‘love letters’ to the LGBTQ community. Here our MTV Staying Alive Ambassador, Leona Lewis, shares hers.

Between growing up with my proud gay uncle — wearing the most fabulous blue eye liner and layers of mascara, my Welsh blonde-haired mother and my Guyanese father, diversity was not only accepted but celebrated within my household. I’m one of the lucky ones who grew up with a family that embraced our differences and when I faced adversity from the outside world I had their strength and support helping me to hold my head high and be proud of who I am.

Sadly, there are so many within the LGBTQ community that do not have the support they need and who are facing discrimination and violence. I celebrate Pride for the unity it brings us and the message to spread love and end hate.

MTV Staying Alive supports LGBTQ communities around the world. Here’s one of our favourite projects run by two very inspiring people in Kenya.
