As the World mourns the loss of Nelson Mandela, we look back on the life of a true hero
Mandela not only overturned racial inequality in South Africa, he lent his voice to the fight against HIV—a cause that became even more important to him after he lost his son to the disease in 2005.
MTV Staying Alive were lucky enough to spend some time with Nelson Mandela, when we sent four young people from different parts of the world, who were all undergoing huge personal struggles, to South Africa to seek his guidance.
Featuring the man himself, we made this documentary 10 years ago alongside Beyoncé and Kelly Rowland in which he talked about HIV/AIDS.
He explained to one of our young leaders, Henry Luyombya, that “HIV/AIDS is one of the greatest wars facing humanity in the world, it is a war against humanity, and that is how we should fight it.”
The world has lost a great leader who inspired a generation, but he leaves behind a legacy of social justice, equality, and tolerance.
