Thursday 29th June 2017 was an incredible moment for women in Northern Ireland. They’ll now be able to have free abortions in England!

The change of policy has been described by the the British Pregnancy Advisory Service as a “landmark moment” for women and girls. Until now, despite the fact that they are UK tax payers “£1,400 is what Northern Irish women were having to spend to get an abortion …in England” Stella Creasy MP said.

Unlike the rest of the UK, abortion laws in Northern Ireland are much stricter and having an abortion is illegal even in cases of rape, incest and fatal foetal abnormalities. Abortion is only permitted in instances where the life or mental health of the mother is in danger.

Members of Parliament from various political parties stood up for the right for women to access free abortion services in mainland Britain. The response to the news on Twitter has been overwhelmingly positive too!

Amidst those celebrating the triumph on Twitter included: Radio presenter – Julia Hartley-Brewer, The Family Planning Association  & David Lammy MP.
